CLASH BETWEEN STILP AND DIAMOND AMBITIONS PARALYZES PLUTOCRATS
Things started off going so well, just as we were adjusting our expectations to the death of the Stilp/Potts ticket and Stilp's humble decision to run for Lieutenant Governor. We plutocrats envisioned Speaker Russ Diamond in the House and Senate President Gene Stilp in the Senate. It looked WE were really IN. More money for us, and less money for middle class Pennsylvanians, our eternal enemy.
Through several of our many eager agents, we were able to prevail on Governor Rendell to get the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, former Congressman Joe Hoeffel, to get out of the race. But then, it started to unravel. No one else would get out. It was a four candidate race now, and without our help, it seemed that our boy Gene Stilp could finish fourth.
THE CAD--H. Thurston Cadwalader, VII--was willing to raise "at least" $250 million for a Stilp gubernatorial bid. But he bridled at raising ANY money at all for a Lieutenant Governor candidate. His minimum contribution of $10 million dollars "just didn't seem appropriate" for a Lieutenant Govenor candidates. "It's such a minor office, he said, "AND I am such an important guy."
Diamond's pulling out of the Speaker race hurt us too. It looked like one of the best and the brightest would be lost to us. Then it became clear he was running for Governor. A lot of people reported to us that they felt "used."
The Diamond for Governor boomlet hurt Stilp by diverting attention from his campaign. But Diamond's clear and unequivocal gubernatorial candidacy hurts Stilp all the more. If Diamond runs, and Stilp runs on a Rendell ticket, then Stilp would have to push Rendell to win.
"It's time for the most radical of all strategies to force both the Stilp and Diamond forces to start cooperating, " THE CAD told me."
"You don't mean," I started to say.
"Yes I do, " he said, "It is time for a CAPITAL STRIKE. No money for either of them until they get their acts together."
The latest Gene Stilp campaign filing showed he had only $3, 700 or so left. It looks like he will not be able to get the big money he needs from the plutocrats.
I hope calmer heads will prevail in time to buy the election for him. We plutocrats NEED a lieutenant governor we can trust to keep the legislature in tow, to stop it from succumbing to pressures from the middle class. The way Stilp started flexing his political muscle against Chip Brightbill recently was pure genius, pure Gene Stilp. With all our money, with all our power, we can not afford to let control of the number two position in state govenment fall out of our grasp just because of a foolhardy bid by Russ Diamond for Governor on a third party ticket.
